Seven seats, summing to exactly 100. On a half-mile oval the live positions are the leader cutting his own mile, the pocket, first over at the leader's throatlatch, and second over. Roughly a quarter of winners come from further back than that, and the table below is where they come from.

Batavia is the slowest of the halves on this list and the least forgiving of a wide trip. With no passing lane, the rail-fifth horse has to wait for a hole that frequently never opens, so seat value collapses toward the front end and pocket even harder than the generic half-mile table implies. Quarters in the :29 range mean the leaver is rarely soft in the second half; the horses that beat him are usually the ones sitting first-over off a live cover, not the closers.

Batavia writes a claiming-heavy book with a thick band of low-end conditioned races on top of it, and the same horses recycle through both. A drop in claiming tag here is usually real money talk, not a class illusion, but a move from claiming into an NW-money condition often is not a drop at all. Price the purse against the horse's own last three purses before you credit a class edge.
